Welcome to the Watch List Weekly, exclusively for paid subscribers...
When I was doing short-biased research for institutional investors, one our subscribers – a significant hedge fund portfolio manager who today runs billions of dollars – told me he wanted to see our list of covered companies every week. I told him it rarely changed. His response was – and I remember it very clearly – “I don’t care, I want to see it.”
That gave birth to something I called the Watch List Weekly.
In addition to an update list of our covered companies, and their price changes, the WLW became a place for all sorts of things... from riffing on the markets to things we were working on to random observations. More than anything, it was a way to keep in touch with our subscribers.
I feel the same way about Herb on the Street...
I’ve wrestled with the prospect of writing something weekly, having lived a professional life dictated by hourly, daily, weekly and even monthly deadlines. I still strongly believe in not publishing for the sake of publishing… to meet a pre-ordained schedule. That’s why I don’t promise any specific number of Red Flag Alerts or On the Streets.
Still, I’m always working on “things,” some of which never get beyond square one, but may add value to even one subscriber... or prompt somebody to reach out with more information confirming or disproving my thesis. There are things I read, podcasts I listen to, thoughts I have… and, in general, they have no place to go.
Some may become separate On the Street entries, but all too often they wind up stranded in the ether and clutter of my computer.
Many are perfect for the Watch List Weekly.
My goals for the Watch List Weekly are to…
Remind you of anything I did that you might have missed during the week.
Provide updates.
Keep you up on things I’ve been working on... or thinking about.
Share anything really good that I’ve read, listened to or watched.
Include an updated version of the Red Flag Alerts list and a reminder of what’s on the Red Flag Radar.
While there may be variations, I hope to run the WLW every week.
Big caveat, and if I could put this in big, bold, neon lights, I would: I’m generally committing to writing 46 weeks out of the year; might be more, might be less. I’ve been doing this long enough to know to leave room for vacations, holidays, illness and, in general, life getting in the way.
Now that we’ve gotten that out of the way, on with the show...
